Quote of the Day
How can you come to know yourself? Never by thinking, always by doing. Try to do your duty, and you'll know right away what you amount to. ~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Getting Checked
I had lunch today with one of the kids I mentor. I have known the young man for over 7 years now. (Wow...) He has often looked to me for guidance, support, food, and a kick in the pants when needed.
So it was funny when today we were sitting down to each & he says, "So Ms. L what's up? What's the plan? What's the 5 year plan?"
And I had to look @ him because I have often said those same words to him. To keep him on track.
Checked.
So I begin to give him my outline.
Then he says, "OK. So what are we going to do about your socializing?"
Again I give him a look of WHAT?
Checked.
"We need to get you out of the house. You need to have a man again. What is it that you like to do?"
Again another stare. (Who is this kid?)
So he gives me a couple of suggestions. The main one is to attend church with him this Sunday.
Checked.
By the time I returned to work I was embodied with so many different emotions. Pride that I have played a small part in this young man who will become a great man. Awe in that he could see I needed to be checked. And love because he thought enough to check me.
So I say thank you Alex P. Keating (My nickname for him) for checking me!

Barack Obama
As a reader and supporter of Mr. Barack Obama...his message
I'm about to take the stage in St. Paul and announce that we have won the Democratic nomination for President of the United States.
It's been a long journey, and we should all pause to thank Hillary Clinton, who made history in this campaign. Our party and our country are better off because of her.
I want to make sure you understand what's ahead of us. Earlier tonight, John McCain outlined a vision of America that's very different from ours -- a vision that continues the disastrous policies of George W. Bush.
But this is our moment. This is our time. Our time to turn the page on the policies of the past and bring new energy and new ideas to the challenges we face. Our time to offer a new direction for the country we love.
It's going to take hard work, but thanks to you and millions of other donors and volunteers, no one has ever been more prepared for such a challenge.
Thank you for everything you've done to get us here. Let's keep making history.
Barack

Awesome Courageous Woman
I should have provided this information when I first learned of Sgt. Gale's assault, but I am sometimes a punk when it comes to all things law enforcement. Always hits too close to home.
My father's occupation for the last 34 years has been in law enforcement. He is now the Police Chief of our hometown. My family has suffered through various threats and I have often found myself in fear of my father's life.
In December 2007 Sgt. Courtney Gale of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department was severely injured while working an off-duty job. If you have any knowledge of the pay of police officers you understand their need to work additional security positions. For most of my life my father has done this to supplement his income. And as Sgt. Gale's story tells it always a test of faith that you leave that job unscathed.
I will not provide all the details of the attack of Sgt. Gale by a mentally unstable person in a Kroger Supermarket. Please visit Get Well Courtney for more details. I will say that the fact she is alive today February 20, 2008 is a miracle. Along with that she is alive, but speaking, walking, and rebuilding her life is a sign of God's favor. I recently had the opportunity to visit her at Shepherd's Hospital in Atlanta, GA. I did not know what I would encounter when I entered her room, but I was moved to tears. My father was moved to tears. She is remarkable. And what's more remarkable...she wants to return to work as a police officer! The fact that she is having to re-learn every skill we were taught as a toddler is not shaming, denying or diminishing her desire to serve her community. And for that I applaud her and I am thankful that she is alive to provide her love, concern and care to my community of Athens-Clarke County
