One of the game's true icons, a player so esteemed that - 10.03.11 - SI Vault

I have no plans on reading this book.  I am a true fan of Walter Payton.  My father called me Sweetness after Walter because of my playing around with family in football games.  I bonded with him during this time and I will not allow someone to ruin that memory.  Everyone has faults, demons and issues which keep us from being perfect.  After all we are not God.  Nothing anyone writes can alter my view that he was and is the running back which changed the game.  He will ALWAYS BE SWEETNESS.

The Olympics are HERE! Part II

Are you watching the Opening Ceremonies of the 2008 Summer Olympics? I am. Avid sports fan so anything that will get my juices flowing is a good thing. (Sidenote: How excited was I when I watched Sunday Night Football this past week???!!!!!!!!!)

You can watch the Opening Ceremonies & the events on N-B-C!

So in honor of the games (I am ignoring the whole China thing...nothing against the people...just their policies) I want to showcase the PROUD BLACK AMERICANS that have represented our country...even when OUR country did not want them...

Enjoy...I warn you...might be a long post!

ESPY Awards

As many of you know I am an avid sports fan. Haven't found one I don't like. So I am sitting here watching the ESPY awards & loving that this year's Arthur Ashe Award goes to Tommie Smith & John Carlos. Many remember the picture. The shot that made history & shocked the world.

Congratulations to these men...Tommie Smith & John Carlos for their stance & win.

(If a video becomes available with the tribute I will repost.)

Wimbledon Fashion

Sports junkie (& unemployed chick) that I am have stayed glued to the TV for Wimbledon. It's a highlight of my summer since football is taking soooo long to get here.

Normally, the highlight is not the outfits the competitors were. Especially since the Americans seem to be dropping like flies. Ole England has a rule about Wimbledon. All white or no play. So how could you dress that up? This is year the maker's that be have taken it up a notch! Really.

Check out Huffington

To get you started...but please go to the link above to see the others.

Perseverance

Did you spend your weekend watching the Gymnastics Olympic Trials? Nope? I did.

Unfortunately, gymnastics is not on the radar of most black folks. I guess it falls in lines of tennis and golf. Expensive as hell. I was lucky. My Mom enrolled me when I was 2 and I didn't quit until 16. Those curves & a knee that would not act right. But over the years I have gone back to teach and test my mettle to see if I could still do the skills. (It's funny I can walk on a 4 inch beam without falling off, but give me land....shit...I will make a mess. 6 concussions for proof.)

I am always excited every 4 years when it is Olympic time. The honor. The skill. The perseverance. The will to be the best. It always gets me.

So this weekend I watched my favorite men and women (really the men are really men but the women are all under 20...) The men's team has been named but it will take a camp to determine the additional women. So excited to see a darker hue in the running. Dominique Dawes was a long time ago.

One of my favorite commericals is of Derek Redmond. A British Track & Field athlete that suffered an injury during a heat. And his father who guranteed he completed the race. That type of love and affirmation is awesome.

This is footage of the race.

This is footage of the commercial.
