Athens-Clarke County Sgt. Courtney Gale was released from the Shepherd Center almost three months after a brutal stabbing attack. It was less than two weeks before Christmas. At 31 years old, Gale was like many of her fellow officers, she needed to earn some extra money. On this night, it was relatively light duty working security at the local Kroger. Gale spotted a homeless man, 44-year-old Stephen Anthony Eberhart, using a butcher knife to rip open packages of meat. When she approached, Eberhart he attacked her, knocking her to the ground and repeatedly stabbing her in front of horrified shoppers. Gale survived the attacked, but suffered life altering injuries. Dr. Darryl Kaelin, director of the Acquired Brain Injury Program at the Shepherd Center is one of Gale's doctors. "Courtney has suffered severe injuries to her body and in particular, her arms and legs. And the resulting blood loss resulted in brain injury," Kaelin said.
