No Way Out

A couple who failed to evacuate a nursing home where 35 died after Hurricane Katrina speaks for the first time about their decision with correspondent Harold Dow.

I watched this last night and was torn between guilt or innocence. I understand just like everyone else that the Army Corp of Engineers and their sorry excuse for design were the main cause for destruction during Katrina, however, when you are dealing with the elderly and frailty you should always make decisions with aggressive caution as your foremost thought. The elderly and young are the ones often without a voice and need conscious minded individuals standing in as their voice. The 35 people who died at St. Rita's did not have this voice. Bayou country is always dealing with hurricanes, it is their history and life. But I have to question why someone would not evacuate when they hear that a category 5 hurricane is coming your way. That means as close to armageddon as you get.

Guilt or innocence is a tough call for the owners and operators of St. Rita's but you should always error in the side of aggressive caution when dealing with nature and the elderly.
