Yes he was. Did you read his autobiography?

no. i read alot of sports articles about him. one in particular written by the late ralph wiley who said, "i'd never met a more good and gentle man in my life than arthur ashe." i think they way ashe handled himself upon learning of his disease spoke volumes about his soul.
