Thankful Sunday-29 June 2008

I am thankful for....

~the unmoving, non-changing rock that is my Mommie (yes, I call her that...or Ma)

~that my baby sis is growing up & I have not had to kill or her or had the notion to (not something I could say 3 yrs. ago)

~my apartment. I have been unemployed for almost 1 yr. & my folks have footed the bill (Thanks Old People)
Their 40th High School Class Reunion---seat dancing

~my nephew Cameron Isaiah. When I walk into the room I am all he sees. He forgets his Grandma (his caregiver while my sis in in school & @ work), his Granddaddy who screams his name. I couldn't do what I was suppose to do back home b/c he fussed every time I left the room. To be loved so much is a blessing.

~my Mommie taking me grocery shopping and spending time finding food that she "thinks" I should be eating. (I have lost a lot of weight during my unemployment. Parents are getting concerned.)

~my cousin Randall. My baby died last Saturday. He gave me 1 of his old phones. Not in the same game as my baby but I do have a phone.

~my cousin Chase. Emailing me & saying he still is missing me in Hawaii. How am I going to let him go back to Iraq? I stole his combat pillow...do you think that will help?

~my cousin Randall. He always makes me feel cherished. In his mind I am still that little girl who needs watching. (He was the designated walker w/ me to & from elementary school. My independent self made him walk behind me b/c I could do it myself!)

~my baby Platinum. She has been without me for 2 weeks. When she finally walked out of the bathroom (loves the cold tiles) she was sooooo happy!

~my Sony Vaio!!! It helps me keep in touch w/ all of you and the world wide web! What did I do before?

~Mommie giving me baby sis's dishes when we THOUGHT she was going off to school. (Pregnant her senior yr. @ home going to college.)

Saturday Morning Recap-Week 06/21-06/27/2008

Ok...I am attempting. <----key word....to start something regular besides my Quote of the Day. (Which is not a regular as I attended. Sometimes when reading through my books, files and journal entries nothing suits my fancy.) Anyhoo...since I read all types of e-zines and articles I always want to tell you about it. The fear of being redundant holds me back.

So the genius that I am I decided to make a Saturday Morning Recap of the weeks best stories. I hope it works and you enjoy. I have so many stories saved on my Google reader. (You can always check out my google reader widget on the sidebar for more stories.) It's ridiculous.

So enjoy and give me feedback.

Wimbledon Fashion

Sports junkie (& unemployed chick) that I am have stayed glued to the TV for Wimbledon. It's a highlight of my summer since football is taking soooo long to get here.

Normally, the highlight is not the outfits the competitors were. Especially since the Americans seem to be dropping like flies. Ole England has a rule about Wimbledon. All white or no play. So how could you dress that up? This is year the maker's that be have taken it up a notch! Really.

Perseverance

Did you spend your weekend watching the Gymnastics Olympic Trials? Nope? I did.

Unfortunately, gymnastics is not on the radar of most black folks. I guess it falls in lines of tennis and golf. Expensive as hell. I was lucky. My Mom enrolled me when I was 2 and I didn't quit until 16. Those curves & a knee that would not act right. But over the years I have gone back to teach and test my mettle to see if I could still do the skills. (It's funny I can walk on a 4 inch beam without falling off, but give me land....shit...I will make a mess. 6 concussions for proof.)

I am always excited every 4 years when it is Olympic time. The honor. The skill. The perseverance. The will to be the best. It always gets me.

So this weekend I watched my favorite men and women (really the men are really men but the women are all under 20...) The men's team has been named but it will take a camp to determine the additional women. So excited to see a darker hue in the running. Dominique Dawes was a long time ago.

One of my favorite commericals is of Derek Redmond. A British Track & Field athlete that suffered an injury during a heat. And his father who guranteed he completed the race. That type of love and affirmation is awesome.

This is footage of the race.

This is footage of the commercial.

HELP...HELP

I tried earlier today to add Creative Commons to my website and was blocked because my IP address is on the block list. What do I need to do to add copyright to my page.

Do I need to change my address so I can get it or are there other options?

My Life~Street renamed for Slain Lawman

This act that occurred December 15, 2000 hits home for me. I come from a law enforcement family. I can honestly say that he has always done what he thought was right and just. (Come on, he showed no preference when my brother lost his mind. He never fixed a ticket for me...I have had many. Pulled over for spending 6 times in a 2 year period.) And I never use his name because he won't back my play. He always said "I will leave you there" and I don't doubt him. I have seen it.

But the flip side of law enforcement. The side we don't see. You know what we see, the cops beating the shit out of people. The cops planting evidence. The cops asking for favors to get out of trouble. That's not him. But what is him. Arresting people who promised they would get even. They would seek revenge in the best place. The family.

I have been on that end. When I received a phone call saying I needed to be extra aware because some fool was out and wanted to punish him. More times than I can count. I have been watched by the law to make sure I got home safely from school or work or wherever I was going. It has happened and I know that it will continue to happen. It's the life.

So I am thrilled to see this road in Dekalb. Unfortunately, the crime was committed by someone also in law enforcement but it does not diminish the fact that it is real. Speak to any other family in law enforcement. They will tell you.

Tell me what you think. I am wrong to feel this way? Have law enforcement tainted life so much for Black America that they cannot accept and have passion?

Protecting Your Blog

As we all know people steal on the net. It is what it is. When you write...you write from your heart and soul. It represents who you are and know one wants to have that stripped. I found this post here and it gives a run down of what you can do to protect your heart in the blog world.

Tell me what you do to protect your life on the blogsphere.

My Autobiography Would SOUND Like This

I stole this from The Jaded NYer who stole it from somewhere else.

Found it fun and interesting so it took a little time (honestly a WHOLE lot of time) to come up with my soundtrack. I love older music so don't be shocked if you do not see the latest. It's just how I roll.

Let me know what you think?!

So here goes:If your life were a movie, what songs would be on the soundtrack? Copy and paste the list of different scenes below and fill in your answers.

This is WHY ClayCo. is in trouble!

School board hopefuls take aim at superintendent

By JOHN HOLLIS
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 06/22/08

John W. Thompson wasn't in attendance at Sunday evening's candidate forum sponsored by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and WSB-TV.

But the new Clayton County schools corrective superintendent was very much the topic of conversation before the approximately 150 people gathered at Clayton State University.

More specifically, it was his $285,000 salary and flexible contract that excludes him from having to answer to the school board as the county fights to save its accreditation.
"That would have to be reconsidered," said District 5 candidate Phyllis Moore, "because that's not the way we're supposed to be operating."

A Letter from the HEART

This is TMI...but it helped me in my personal recovery from feeling inadequate, unworthy and a plain mess. I am only sharing in hopes to uplift and provide words like others did that helped me come out of the dark.
To my cuz,
My friend,
My sister,
Being a part of your life has made me more powerful than any of my previous conquest.
Knowing you could inspire nations to lay down arms and only strive to be the best.
With the sun and moon on my shoulders, you are the star and that is where I will always hold you.
Please always sing your song for the world. So we may know that angels still walk here, and give us a glimpse of the power we could...

Pics from Vaca in Hawaii

Hello Blog WORLD! I am truly clueless on who reads my page and enjoy what I write on. With that said...I have been in Hawaii for a while and now back in the South and want to share my pics of a great trip. Not because it was a beautiful place (it really is) but I was there with my baby (I call everyone who finds a place in my heart that...trust me it is an exclusive place) and we had a great adventure! Luckily he will be able to come home at the end of August for a couple of weeks before he deploys for Iraq for the 4 TIME @ age 23. Yeah, that's some bullshit. SO I plan on showing him the life I live here and Grandma plans on cooking everything that he loves.

Anyhoo...here are some pics of my trip from my digital camera. I have like 4 rolls of still camera that needs to be developed but here is the breakfast of the trip. If you want to see more pics then email me...search blogger for my address-its easy and I will add you to my online pic album.

I hope you enjoy!

Some of My Random Thoughts during my trip

^So glad I stayed up & was tipsy so I could sleep through the 12 hours on the plane.

^Please let me like this girl. Please, please, please.

^I am so broke......Why am I in Hawaii? Because he wants me here & that's enough for me.

^This is the life. Laying on the sofa in the patio....miles of ocean.

^OMG!!! He is trying to get me drunk!!! & nice enough to buy my beer-Guinness!!

^He is a Colquitt...he can cook!!!

^Weird that I can be cold Hawaii. Had to borrow a sweat shirt and lounging pants.

^He doesn't have AC & leaves his patio door open...Can people still do that?

^Flip flops are all the rage! Heels not needed!

^So shocked that the ocean is cold to me. But I enjoyed the sun, the breeze, & the people watching.

^How cool is it that a couple married 50 feet from me on the beach?!? It was so sweet. & cheap. That's what I am talking about.

^Snorkeling is fun. But those damn flippers. I believe I can do without. Proud of myself that I tried it & LOVED IT!

^I love it that we can go back to the house & just chill & talk. No need to "plan" anything.

^She loves the hell out of him. I am glad. He deserves it. I want someone to watch out for him.

^Her 1st time out in a bar. A novice.

^I despise men trying hard. Vodka tonic is not a grown woman drink. And saying that is not a compliment.

^Do not walk up to me asking why I am frowning. Obviously because of you & no I do not need lasik or contacts. I just don't want to put my glasses on. I look cute with them don't think anything different.

^Saying "Two ships passing in the night" does not make want to fuck you. Even with your British accent.

^And giving me 2x shots of vodka & tonic does not endear me to you.

^Are you kidding me? "Does your breath stink?"
"Does my breath stink?"

"What? Why would you ask me that? Don't you know?"

"I haven't brushed my teeth since this morning."

"It's 2 am. "OMG"

^Staying up to see the sunrise in Hawaii. Priceless.

^Can't remember the name of the sandwich shop, but it was the best sub I have ever had!

^Telling you about our family is awesome. I am so happy & grateful that you want to know.

^Yeah I know I have all the secrets of our family. Cool huh?

^WTF? I am too drunk to skydive!

^No I just woke up. I am jumping out of plane!

^Why is my body RED?

^OMG! I am suppose to leave today! I can't jump!

^You are the greatest! Thanks for extending my trip!

^I hate you!

^I love you!

^I am the bomb! Watch me do 1-arm push ups!

^No you didn't just do a split!

^Don't your dumb ass fall of this cliff. I am not telling Grandma I lost you. And you won't get her potato salad.

^Thank you for giving me one of the best vacations and experiences of my life!

101 in 1001 Days-Update

So if you keep up with me you know I have been in Hawaii visiting my cousin Chase. It was an awesome trip. (I will tell and share more later.) Because he is so awesome (can you tell I love that word?) he wanted to help me complete items on my list. So we went SKYDIVING!!!

Trust me. The morning of the trip I was giving him ugly looks because we had stayed up drinking until like 4 in the morning and it was 8 and the fool is talking about jumping out of an airplane. WTF? But that's him.

Once I said "Alright leave me the f*** alone I will do it!!!" I was cool. Actually took a nap while waiting for the jump. (All the Guinness I consumed.) Climbing 14000 feet in a damn crop duster wasn't as bad as I thought it would be and I was surprisingly calm. Although I did look at him to say "I hate you."

I let my jumper convince me that we should do flips out of the plane. IT WAS SO COOL!!!

When I landed I ran to Chase and said "I love you!!"

It was that special and I was so happy to share it with him.

I will post the letter he wrote in a book I was reading at his house. I cried when I read it. Hell I cried when I left him at the airport. I have always cried when I dropped him at an airport to deploy. But this time he saw me. I usually say "Ok go so you won't see me cry." I love that boy.

Enjoy the slide show!!!

Strawberry Moon To Rise Wednesday Night, Actually Just An Illusion

Strawberry Moon To Rise Wednesday Night, Actually Just An Illusion
from The Full Feed from HuffingtonPost.com by The Huffington Post News Editors
As the full moon rises this Wednesday evening, June 18, many people will be tricked into thinking it's unusually large
The moon illusion, as it's known, is a trick in our minds that makes the moon seem bigger when it's near the horizon. The effect is most pronounced at full moon. Many people swear it's real, suggesting that perhaps Earth's atmosphere magnifies the moon.
But it really is all in our minds. The moon is not bigger at the horizon than when overhead.

The Week in Photos--May28-June3

My life in a week with family and friends. I am thankful.

Barack Obama

As a reader and supporter of Mr. Barack Obama...his message

I'm about to take the stage in St. Paul and announce that we have won the Democratic nomination for President of the United States.

It's been a long journey, and we should all pause to thank Hillary Clinton, who made history in this campaign. Our party and our country are better off because of her.

I want to make sure you understand what's ahead of us. Earlier tonight, John McCain outlined a vision of America that's very different from ours -- a vision that continues the disastrous policies of George W. Bush.

But this is our moment. This is our time. Our time to turn the page on the policies of the past and bring new energy and new ideas to the challenges we face. Our time to offer a new direction for the country we love.

It's going to take hard work, but thanks to you and millions of other donors and volunteers, no one has ever been more prepared for such a challenge.

Thank you for everything you've done to get us here. Let's keep making history.

Barack

Woman who cursed MARTA rider now in special home | ajc.com

The woman whose tirade against an elderly MARTA train passenger was caught on video has been released from jail and is living in a personal care home for the mentally ill.

read more digg story

I watched the video once and it was enough for me. I was ashamed @ people who laughed and made jokes. In my eyes it was obvious a mental illness was at the forefront not a woman acting a fool. I am pleased that the government saw this and decided to do the right thing and get her help. Not sentence her. SO often people who have mental illness are thrown into prison instead of being offered the treatment they need. It is known that prison does not rehabilitate. It provides education on how to be better @ whatever they were placed in prison for.

Please pray for this girl and the victim. They both will need it. Although I believe that the older lady (victim) recognized the illness. She comes from the generation when we locked "the special" person in the backroom.

Natural Hair

A well written article about natural vs. straight hair on Black College Wire.

A small excerpt.

Hair Debate Rages On as Natural Styles Take Root

By Ashley McDonald - Black College Wire

Each morning at the start of the day, two women prepare to perform their daily beauty rituals.
One woman reaches in her drawer and pulls out her flat iron to smooth out her chemically-straightened tresses. The smell of oil and burning hair rises to the ceiling. Once done straightening, a cloud of oil sheen surrounds her head. The fog clears and after 30 minutes in the mirror, her hair is finally presentable.

Just down the street, the other woman stares into her bathroom mirror. She does not have a bone straight mane resting on her head. Instead she reaches for her afro pick, detangles her tight coils, applies some natural oils to her kinky mane, ties her headband securely and marvels in the beauty of her natural texture.

When it comes to African-American women, hair can be a touchy subject. Some women cling tightly to the implications that surround having long silky hair, while other women choose to display what nature placed on their heads.
